The Shoyu Stand - Part 2
The quest for the best ramen in Bangkok continues. We went back to Thonglor and The Shoyu Stand at J Avenue. On my previous visit I had the most amazing cold ramen, one of my top 5 favorite bowls in Bangkok,. This time I was on a mission to try their most famous dish, the Cappuccino ramen. You can read the first part of the review here.
The Cappuccino ramen is actually Futomen (think noodles) in Tori Paitan (thick chicken stock) topped with Espuma foam, served with chashu, menma and soy pickled egg. The dish is is extremely aesthetic and instagrammable. I wanted to try if it was just a gimmick or if it actually tastes good too.
The ramen in served in a large tea cup with a fluffy foam, hence the name “Cappuccino Ramen”. It comes with the toppings on the side, along with a chili paste and a curry oil.
I suggest trying the broth as it is before adding any of the condiments. The chicken broth is soft, creamy and comforting. The noodles are bouncy and just perfect! You can either dip your toppings in the broth, or just throw them all in there. They taste just as delicious no matter what. If you add the chili paste you get a bit of a kick, but it’s still quite gentle and not too spicy. The curry oil changes the whole dish, so be careful to not add too much (or don’t add at all if you’re not into curry).
So is it more than just a gimmick? Oh yes! It’s great! Would I order it again? Yes and no, it depends if they’ve run out of the cold ramen or not. The cold ramen is still my favorite dish on their menu.
The legendary cold ramen with ice cube dashi, menma, chashu, soy pickled egg and yuzu. You can read more about it here.
The Cappuccino Ramen looks a little less pretty after a few minutes, but it still tastes just as good.
Located at the second floor of J Avenu, right opposite to Maisen. It’s a 20 minute walk from Thonglor bts, or a 5 minute motorbike ride.
There’s parking at J Avenue, make sure to get a “stamp” at the cashier.
